Trance and Possession Disorder is a dissociative condition where an individual temporarily loses their sense of identity and behaves as if possessed by a spirit, deity, supernatural force, or another personality. This condition is often influenced by cultural beliefs, psychological stress, trauma, or underlying mental health disorders.
Characteristics of Trance and Possession Disorder
- Altered State of Consciousness – The person may appear trance-like and unresponsive to surroundings.
- Loss of Personal Identity – Acting or speaking as if controlled by an external force.
- Unusual Movements or Speech – Speaking unfamiliar languages, ritualistic behavior, or abnormal postures.
- Lack of Control – Little or no memory of events after the episode ends.
